KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Malaysia's health ministry said on Monday (May 17) that if existing coronavirus limitations fail to contain a surge in new cases, the country's most industrialized state may be placed under total lockdown.
As it grapples with an increase in COVID-19 infections that scientists have suggested may entail extremely infectious strains, the government barred social events and travel between districts and states two weeks ago as part of a Movement Control Order (MCO) issued before the Hari Raya celebrations.
Business activity can continue, but the government may be forced to shut it down in Selangor if the situation worsens, according to Health Minister Adham Baba.
As the country's maritime center and industrial center, Selangor contributes significantly to GDP and jobs.
It's also where some of the world's best rubber glove manufacturers, including Top Glove, have set up shop.
"If the MCO is unable to limit the spread, a full MCO may be contemplated," Adham said at a virtual press conference.
